June and I often walk to the top of Moraga Hill in the Inner Sunset for the exercise and beautiful view of The City. Recently, the view on the huge staircase leading up to the top of the hill has become even more incredible thanks to the newly unveiled 16th Avenue and Moraga Street tiled steps project. Originally inspired by a mosaic staircase in Rio de Janeiro, project organizer Jessie Audette in concert with hundreds of volunteers and donors from the neighborhood and elsewhere, and with the help of two obviously talented artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, managed to raise enough money and cut through the administrative red tape required to bring this project from a nearly impossible dream to an absolutely stunning piece of urban art that will surely live on for generations to enjoy in the future. Trust me, this staircase is a sight to behold, June and I are both awed and inspired by it every time we see it. It surely is destined to become a landmark in its own right, and at this point may take top honors as the most amazing staircase in all of San Francisco, which is really saying something considering the number of staircases in this city! So, please enjoy these photographs of the mosaic staircase (in bottom to top order), and you can also visit the project’s official website at TiledSteps.org to learn more about the story behind this fantastic work of art.
